Mealtime woes: an update

December 19, 2012

Bentos for December

So far, I’ve made some crabs, two snowmen and even a frazzled mother (that is me, yelling “PLEASE EAT!”). I’ve even attempted to make a stegosaurus with macaroni to join my son in his dino craze this month.

Have we made any progress? Ben is appreciative and eating better, and I’m really happy my efforts paid off. As for Becks, she’s still picking the bits she likes and refusing to eat most of the mains in her bento.

My conclusion? My kids don’t like chinese food; or rather, they’d much prefer soba, seaweed, pasta, cheese and ham anytime. Rice is always the tricky one to get them to eat. And oh yes, they absolutely dislike bread. The good thing is, they love fruits of every sorts and cherry tomatoes, and these will have to be the mainstay of all their bento meals for a long while.

That sounds like a very healthy diet to me actually: soba, seaweed, pasta, cheese, ham and fruits. As long as there’s also some veg and unprocessed meat in the mix. The bentos do look great! I would devour them if I were a kid.

My kids love chawamushi or just steamed egg with minced pork/mushroom/prawn. They will gladly eat that with rice. Fried omelettes too, we will chop spinach and put it inside. I have one that adores bread and another who detest it. Breakfast is challenging but they both love what I eat for breakfast …. the Sweet Home Farm Blueberry and Flax Granola (can get from NTUC or cold storage) with milk.

I like the snowman idea and it’s so apt for the Christmas season. Will have fried rice help then since it has other flavor in them and hence more appetizing?

The snowman was, unfortunately, not devoured at all. Crabstick and cheese and seaweed were, but the rice was untouched, even when I tried to put a little tomato sauce on it. 🙁 I have worse luck with fried rice, Susan. They pick what they wanna eat and then take forever to finish it. And usually they hate everything mixed together. Tell me what to do, so fussy these kiddos!

Thanks, Abby! Looked good but not finished most of the time. Sigh!
