Family life as we know it Happy days The Kao Kids

Two loaves, sixteen cupcakes and a happy weekend

July 15, 2012

The car’s at the mechanic till Tuesday, so we were all home bound this weekend.

For the first time, we didn’t have to crack our heads to think of where to go for breakfast / lunch / dinner, or where to head to so our kids can have their energies expended. We told the kids the car’s not available, so we’d have to make the most of the weekend at home.

And so they did. They played with toy cars, rowed imaginary boats, blew soap bubbles, clowned around with Nat’s rattles, read books, solved puzzles (we finally got down to using the Grolier Logico Primo system) and watched the terrapins chomp down all the fish in the tank (yes, by Sunday there was zero fish). They also played peek-a-boo with their baby brother and hide-and-seek with each other, and helped me crack eggs, mix batter and measured flour. I churned out a total of two loaves of bread, one with whole wheat and one with organic wholemeal, using the bread machine, a dozen lemon muffins and four more with Koko Krunch, and a loaf of bluberry yogurt sponge. And since we couldn’t go to Pasta Mania at Terminal Three, which we do every weekend to satisfy Ben’s creamy pasta fix, I also made kickass angelhair Alfredo with pure cream, cheese and lots of streaky bacon and honey baked ham.

Very satisfying, for a mother who relieves stress by baking and cooking.

But what made the weekend a truly happy one was that I was eternally grateful we spent it as a family; and that Daddy came home. The reason why the car’s with the mechanic was because the car skidded on a puddle of oil while fatherkao was making the bend on the e’way on a rainy Saturday morning. The bumper crashed into the barricade on the road shoulder and the car spun three-sixty. But God’s angels protected fatherkao and kept him snug in the car. He was unscathed and unhurt despite the damage.

You have no idea how thankful I was to be able to snap this at bedtime:

Thank you, Jesus.

Getting all sentimental now

Letter to my littlest

June 6, 2012

To my precious Nathanael,

When you came, my capacity to love expanded.

I’m so in love with you.

I see your face and I remember that night when you came to me. That night when I first held you and cried and wondered if I could be a good mummy and give you my best even though it would seem daunting to have to juggle life with three children from henceforth.

And you made it all too easy for me. You were such a good baby. You latched well. You slept through the night when you were two months – four hours, six hours, then eight. You didn’t even fuss when you were ill. You allowed your siblings to prod you, shove you, tickle you and smother you with hugs and kisses, complete with mucus and all. Whenever they are near you, you’d just smile and look at them with your soulful little eyes, as if you can’t wait to join them. I could carry you in the Beco all day and do all sorts of things: hold their hands, feed them, run in the park and catch bubbles in the playground. I could go on lunch dates with your father. You would just sleep and let Mama spend good time with everyone. And when they are finally asleep everyday, when you have Mama all to yourself, you would hold my finger with your tiny hands, rub your face repeatedly on my chest and lay your head on my shoulder. It’s like your way of saying you’re glad I’m yours now for the rest of the night.

We have long conversations about our hopes and dreams for the future daily. Mama tells you you are made to conquer; that you’d be a mover and shaker of your generation; that you have a destiny. And most importantly, that you are mine and I love you and we are family forever.

I will miss everything about you when I return to work. I will miss your chatter and chuckles and our conversations. Already I am having separation anxiety, even before you go to daycare! Oh, how I wished the day would not come!

I’m getting all sentimental because, you, my littlest, are growing up way too fast for me to handle. But we will get through this together, I know we will.

With all my love, and then some more,

Your Mama

Big Sister Becks

June 3, 2012

Overheard today between Ben and Becks…

(rumbling of thunder in the distance)

Ben: Mama, I’m scared. I don’t want to hear the thunder.

Becks: Don’t worry, darling. I’m here.

Overheard today between Baby Nat and Becks…

Nat: Bawaaaaaaaaaah!

Becks: Ohlalala, Nat Nat, don’t cry. I’ll carry you…

And she isn’t even two.

Enter Lil’ Nat

May 19, 2012

It’s now triple the madness. Ever since little Nat entered our world, the Kao household is never really quite the same again. Here’s what has changed:

1. We’ve all gotten used to Nat’s crying as part of ambient sound. Because this is our third baby, we don’t pick him up as and when he calls. Although I sometimes indulge him a little; this being the last time (hopefully!) I’ll be holding a baby (that’s mine) this small.

2. Peak hours have extended. It used to be crazy from 6 to 8.30pm, but now it’s even crazier, with peak period officially ending at 10. This is because everything gets delayed with Nat in the picture (see #3).

3. My kids have become more clingy than ever. When I was pregnant with Nat, Ben and Becks were pretty ok with feeding themselves and having someone else shower them. But now, it’s “Mama, feed me“, “Mama, change my diapers“, “Mama bathe me“, “Mama clean my mouth“, basically, “Mama, [DO EVERYTHING]“. They would burst into fits and throw ginormous tantrums if fatherkao or the helper were to come along and do what they want me to do. Becks would refuse to eat if I didn’t hold the spoon. Ben would hold on to my thighs. They would both sit on the floor and cry because they want Mama. This is the reason for the extension of peak hours – the three kids would take turns to be fed / cleaned / showered by me, which means that by the time all is settled, Mama is an exhausted wreck. All these would happen on a daily basis while the helper and fatherkao watch helplessly at a corner.

4. My kids have learned how to be considerate and helpful overnight. The clingy part aside, they have turned into helpful little troopers, refilling wet wipes and entertaining Nat when I need a break. They’ve also learned to shush each other up and whisper. This never happened when there were only the two of them.

5. My husband and I have started asking each other for permission to go to the toilet. Usually, when permission is granted, we’ll also furnish each other with details of why we are going and how long we would take.

6.  Our house is filled with a lot more laughter amidst the madness. Yes, we are all stretched thin but when we see the two clowning around the little one, and the little one chuckling repeatedly, we can’t wait for the day when all three of them would start playing together. What fun!

Don’t worry Mama, we still love each other

April 26, 2012

My kids have started to fight. I don’t know when it started but I guess it’s inevitable because feisty-with-fearsome-temper Becks is growing up. But after all that snitching and snatching (we never really interfered till we see blood because, well, sibling rivalry, it’s part and parcel of life), they always kissed and made up and told each other they were sorry and still love each other.

Still, I’m missing this – what they used to do when they were a little younger:

Rowing a boat together

Kissing...
