Just like that, the three of ’em

June 5, 2013

And just like that, the three of them are playing together and doing everything together.

Playing with shoes: all ready for a fashion parade

Playing with shoes: all ready for a fashion parade

They shower together. They eat together. They watch tv (when I allow it) together.

Bath time is fun time: guess who can't wait to jump right into the shower?

Bath time is fun time: guess who can’t wait to jump right into the shower?

Watching tv together: they sit in a row, and enjoy the show!

Watching tv together: they sit in a row, and enjoy the show!

They have conversations with one another, yes, all three of them. The youngest can reply by nodding and shaking, and knows exactly what the older ones are talking about.

Most of the time, it’s monkey see monkey do. If Ben and Beck troop around the house, Nat follows. If they bounce a ball, he follows. Whatever they scale, he scales. Whatever they climb, he follows suit behind.

Monkey see, monkey do. Small monkey can copy anything!

And just like that, the three of them are growing up so quickly. Quicker than my tired feet can run after.

My new mum and dad

May 31, 2013

Did I mention that recently, two kind souls adopted me as their child? They are both 4 and (almost) 3 respectively, and they are parenting me in a whole new way.

~~~
One morning during breakfast, Ben and Becks announced they were no longer, well, Ben and Becks. They are now Mummy and Daddy, and I had to address them as such.
Becks: (to me) We’re Mummy and Daddy, ok, Mama?
Me: Um, I guess. Ok.
Becks: Na, eat your breakfast ah. Finish everything.
Me: Waa, Becks, you’re so rude huh! What happened to ‘Good morning, Mama, here’s your breakfast’?
Becks: I’m Mummy now. I’m not Becks! Daddy and me will go to work now!
Ben: (to Becks) Ya! Let’s go now, dear!
~~~

On the bus one morning, on our way to school, I suggested that we all find our seats quickly and drink some water. The heat’s been so crazy in the mornings. I think Ben and Becks took their water bottles out and took a sip after they settled; I didn’t check or ask. Some minutes later, I whipped out my bottle and started gulping away.

Ben: (to me) Do you know you’re NOT allowed to eat or drink in the bus?

Me: Mmm. Uh. Ok.

Ben: You continue doing that and the bus driver will scold you.

Me: I think water’s ok. Didn’t you drink too?

Ben: Ya, I did but that’s because YOU asked me to and I was obeying you. But I think you should OBEY the sign, you know.

Me: *speechless*

By the way, the last I checked, I didn’t see the ‘No Eating or Drinking’ sign on the bus. I think he must have confused it with the MRT. Just saying.

~~~
Just yesterday, I fell down the stairs. I missed a step and tumbled, and twisted my left ankle. If you really must know, I was checking my phone.
Becks: What happened, huh, tell me. Why you put bandage?
Me: It’s an ankle guard. I fell and my ankle’s swollen.
Becks: Ok, next time please be careful and don’t hurt yourself lah!
Me: Um, ok.
Becks: Remember: BE CAREFUL!
Yes, Mummy Becks. I will remember your words of wisdom. Thank you so much. What happened to good ol’ sayang sayang, love?
~~~

Can I have my children back, please?

Call me, I’ll be waiting

May 30, 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of the greatest thrills in motherhood is to hear your babbling baby finally associate the word “Ma” to your face, and to hear him call out, “Mama”.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to experience this thrill the third time yet. At 15 months, Nat has called out to the birds at the park, the cars on the road, and even those Moove Media cows in the fields.

He’s called his father…

Nat and Dada

He’s said “Ah Ma“…

Nat and Ah Ma

He’s called Gong Gong…

Nat and Gong Gong

We’ve even heard him say Che Che twice with Becks…

Nat calling Che Che

He’s called Ben “Kor Kor” (one of the first few words he’s said) and says it like a hundred times a day. They are best buds now, and hang out together ever so often.

Nat calling Korkor

But when I ask him to say, “Mama”, he either gives me the silent treatment or goes korkorkorkor on me.  -_-

I hope Mama’s still your favourite person, Nat! Call me soon, ok?

The distance that is 5 cm away

April 24, 2013
The distance that is 5 cm away
Is the distance that you can sometimes be comfortably away from me
Any farther than that
I’ll have to see you stomp your feet
Show me a pitiful face
With hot tears rolling down your cheeks

This is the distance that is more than 5 cm away

This is the distance that is more than 5 cm away

And this is really pushing it...

And this is really pushing it…

The distance that is 5 cm away
Is the distance that you would never go
If you were given a choice
For you’d much prefer
To cuddle me tight
Hold me close
Have me babywear you every single waking minute

So in order to keep you less than 5 cm away
I pee with you sitting on my lap (trust me, I have perfected this skill)
I bring you along on the bus to kindy with kor kor and jie jie
I walk you wearing you
I sleep hugging you tight

So that you know
Whenever I have to be more than the distance that is 5 cm away
It’s because I really
Need to
Have to
Breathe
Take a break

And not because
I don’t want you closer
Than the distance that is 5 cm away

Saved, and forever grateful (A story of a girl who still has happy feet)

March 26, 2013

I thought this would only happen to irresponsible mothers and badly behaved children. I’d never imagine this would happen to me.

I had just released her right hand from my grip for three seconds. I was carrying the baby on my hip and needed to adjust the 10-kg weight.

Then it happened. I heard a blood-curdling scream and the next thing I knew, Becks was without her right shoe. When we arrived at the 3rd floor of the mall, Ben picked up her right shoe from the escalator, and this was what we saw.

Shoe caught in escalator

Shoe caught in escalator - side view

Becks’ right shoe got caught in the escalator and I was expecting a gash and profuse bleeding when I checked my little girl’s sole. The babe was still wailing from the shock and I was almost prepared to call the ambulance. I was with three kids and the helper and without the hubs, and the mall was all quiet at 9.30am. We had gone to the basement for breakfast and was going to check out the enrichment centres on the top floor when the incident happened, and I might as well be on my way to crucify myself for being a negligent, terrible mother.

But because the angels of the Lord encamp around those who fear His name, and because the Lord Himself is our Protector and Help, Becks suffered no injury at all.

I don’t believe in luck, and never will. This isn’t because I am lucky. It is a miracle she was unhurt. God was taking care of my children, and He protected my little girl. Thank you, thank you, Jesus.

The day the baby ate paint

March 18, 2013

We were all ready to some painting. I moved the table out of the house (to minimise my cleaning up, hur hur hur) and prepared the Crayola finger paint, some brushes and drawing paper. I told my little Picassos to let their imagination wild and fill the paper with whatever they liked. I gave them little styrofoam bits that came with the laser printer we bought a while ago, and the kids were very excited.

I got things ready for Nat as well, who was anticipating eagerly on the high chair. He’s not new to painting; he’s done it a couple of times at infantcare and his teachers said he was a focused learner who enjoyed the activity a lot. They say he’s never put anything in his mouth while painting. So they say.

Was he interested? Certainly. For a grand total of five seconds. He then spent the next few minutes licking the paintbrush, smearing paint on his tongue and teeth, and frightening me silly eating red ink and making slurping sounds.

The next time Nat paints, he is painting with food colours.

Knock knock, who’s there? Amos, Amos who? A mosquito bite me

March 13, 2013

The mosquito kissed her thrice. Twice on her left and once on her right. She ended that silly love affair at the playground promptly, and came to Mama crying.

She told Mama she was in pain. Mama kissed her boo boo, tousled her hair, and told her to go on and play.

The day went on and she kept complaining she was in pain. She whined the whole evening and refused to have her dinner.

Before bed time, she sobbed at a corner of the house. When no one paid her attention, her whimpering turned to wailing. She hollered in tears, “The mosquito bite me. It’s painful.”

Hot baths, hugs and kisses from everyone and antiseptic cream didn’t work. “It’s only a mosquito bite,” we said to ourselves. “Our daughter is overreacting.” We took the opportunity to teach her the difference between pain and itch.

The next day, the swelling did not subside. It appeared distended.

She remembered the pain intermittently, and wept intermittently. Finally, in the afternoon, when hot tears rolled down her cheeks again, Mama left the other two at home, called a cab and rushed her to the pediatrician.

“She’s allergic to the mosquito bite,” Dr Chan said.

“I want the biscuits,” she whimpered, pointing to Dr Chan’s cookie jar.

“Here you go. Are you still in pain?”

“No,” she smiled.

Learning through craft with the Toddibox – Product review & giveaway

March 12, 2013

I’m a little late with this review. We received the February Toddibox last month and only got to open it just this week. The kids (and adults) have been taking turns falling ill and I have absolutely zero energy left ever since my SAHM gig started. Finally it seems, that we are more settled this week .

The big box came with individually packed activities, similar to the Lollibox I reviewed in December. Objectives and instructions were clearly printed out and slotted in ziplock bags, similar to the Lollibox. The difference between the Toddibox and the Lollibox is that the former is pretty generous with their activity packs. It also comes with a story book related to the Valentine’s Day theme to promote parent-child bonding through reading.

What is in the Toddibox

I was overwhelmed when I opened it because this meant I had to look through every single pack, read what’s in store and decide if it’s age appropriate for Ben and Becks. It was a good thing I opened it before they did, so they wouldn’t go crazy opening ziplock after ziplock and go, “Shall we do this, Mama? And this? And this?”

I personally found the instructions in the Toddibox a little more vague than the instructions in the Lollibox. The ones in the Lollibox were much more detailed and had clear step-by-step instructions complete with illustrations.

Activities in the Toddibox came in four categories – Ten Fingers, Tempo and Beat, Thinking Tots and Test Tube. I naturally gravitated towards the Ten Fingers packs to see how I can occupy my tots with craft activities, being not very crafty myself.

I selected the ‘Family Link’ activity for Ben and Becks. I began the activity as suggested by telling the children about the family members in the house, and that we are all linked together by our love for one another. I got them to cut out the paper people and hearts provided in the pack, had them personalise each member in the household. They also stuck eyes onto the people and coloured them when the glue dried up.

Making the Family Link

There was a fair bit of cutting and I ended up having to cut the paper people for the project because it was difficult for Ben and Becks to cut out its shape with precision. There was also no glue provided so I had to go get white glue from my own stash for the buttons. I also wished there were more than 5 paper people to cut out, because we have a helper and we’ve told the children she’s family too.

The final product now hangs proudly on my front door.

Family Link

On another occasion, the kids got to try ‘Walking in my shoes’. The activity requires the kids to trace the shape of each family member’s foot and make shoe lace holes with the soles that we’ve cut out. This may even be an opportunity to teach older kids how to tie shoe laces or sequencing by getting them to arrange the different soles in ascending order. But because dad wasn’t home for them to trace his foot and the baby was taking his morning nap, I decided to modify the activity a little to tie in with what I’m covering this week for our homelearning. So I got them to trace each other’s left and right foot, had them cut them out and label their soles ‘R’ and ‘L’. We’re making an ‘All about me’ scrapbook in line with this week’s bible verse from Psalm 139:14 (I am fearfully and wonderfully made), so this gets to go into their scrapbook! I also got them to ink their fingerprints and study the lines to see how special their prints were (which lasted five seconds).

Tracing shape of foot

Putting together the things for their scrapbook

There are so many activities to try and we’ve only done two this week. I’ll be working with the kids on our family tree soon, as well as getting them to do some CSI work studying family members’ fingerprints. The box is certainly value for money, and I am sure one box, with its 8 activities, would keep the kids busy the whole month.

I thought I’d put a review of these two activities up first because I have a giveaway for you – next month’s Toddibox!

My mother, my student

March 9, 2013

Little Miss Bossy has found a new hobby lately. She’s decided she wants to be ‘Teacher Jenny’ (the teacher who used to teach her when she was at daycare).

Becks: Mama, sit down!

Me: Ok…

Becks: I’m going to read to you ah. This book is ‘One Fish Two Fish’.

Becks: Fish swim like this (makes action with two hands)

Becks: And fish can drive

Me: Yes, and so says Dr Seuss… (listening as she rambles on about fish for a few minutes)

Becks: Ok, now we sing a song. SING! All the fishes swimming in the water… (she switches from English to Chinese playtime songs about fishes).

Me: All the fishes swimming in the water…

Becks: Hey, Mama! DO WITH ME THE ACTIONS! (hollers at me while the brother watches in amusement)

Me: Right…

Milestones and growing up The Kao Kids Thunderstorm days What to Expect... As a Mother

Mom, interrupted, Part 2

March 8, 2013

We haven’t been doing much homelearning these days. Murphy is quite the chap that’s been sticking around here lately, with the Kao kids taking ill, one after another.

First up, a case of vomitting, high fever, cough and runny nose, needing meds like Rhinatiol, Motillium and Adezio for almost a week.

Then someone had bronchitis and needed Flixotide, Combivent and Sodium Chloride in mist form thrice a day through the nebuliser.

Today, another kid threw up like clockwork and yet another epsiode of stomach flu has begun.

This whole week alone, the kids are finishing up the Paracetamol Suspension faster than I can pronounce ‘Paracetamol’, not to mention tissue papers.

With the remaining energy that’s left, we’ve only managed to go downstairs for mini explorations to search for critters…

Snail hunt

Play ball with the baby who adores all things round every waking minute…

Playing basketball

As well as try a few of the many craft materials in February’s Toddibox (review on that later!)…

Craft from the Toddibox

It’s been quite a manic month, this March. I need to be showing Murphy the door.
