Full facelift, without surgery – Results out from Halley Medical Aesthetics

September 2, 2019

So a while ago, I blogged about how this quick fix is a godsend for a time-starved me.

Yep, I am talking about having gone for Ultherapy at Halley Medical Aesthetics, which, in my opinion, is one of the most beneficial and rewarding aesthetic treatments ever invented.

I mean, what’s there not to love? No need for needles nor scalpels nor knives. Just ultrasound energy with pin-point accuracy directed at three specific skin depths on your face and neck area to stimulate collagen.

Not to mention completely non-invasive.

Plus Halley Medical Aesthetics deliver the promise of 800 lines.

Three months after my Ultherapy experience, I headed back to Halley Medical Aesthetics to meet with Dr Terence Tan to await my results. I could already feel significantly different the same day I did Ultherapy, and as the months went by, it only got better.

Skin felt tighter on Day One, face got smaller by Week 2, and best of all, zero outbreaks during PMS every.single. time.of. the. month.

Awesomeness, I will tell you.

And it’s even more incredible to see the results pictorially, because though you do not see magical transformation like in the case of a plastic surgery, these little improvements actually mean so much to me.

Ok, don’t laugh at this mugshot, was not supposed to smile but pls see how dry my skin used to be at the cheek area

See how my face is smaller, tighter and my eye bags are less pronounced

See how the jawline is quite defined now. Sumpah here no photo-editing AT ALL!

Eyebags were horrible and now, because of the collagen, my undereye has some LIFT!

These, to me, are HUGE improvements, considering Ultherapy is completely non-invasive. You don’t need to break a bank to see such good results, and it really is a worthwhile yearly investment.

Think no outbreaks, natural collagen stimulated (they tell me the peak is at 6 months and this is only the 3rd month!) and best of all, if you have no time for masks, facials and squeezing your zits, Ultherapy takes care of this because you absolutely don’t need to do those things anymore for ‘maintenance’!

Kinda no wonder I was smiling ear to ear at Dr Terence Tan’s office when he showed me the before & after pictures

I can’t recommend this enough – if you are time-starved, need a quick fix, go get your 800 lines of Ultherapy done at Halley Medical Aesthetics. Dr Terence Tan is extremely experienced in delivering the micro ultrasound shots and it’s one hour at his Halley clinic for one year of not having to worry about maintaining your face.

Cos’ the stimulated collagen takes care of it all.

Thank you, Dr Terence Tan, and team! I am really satisfied with the results!

Eye care, I care – Review of Eye Care Monitor from BenQ

August 10, 2019

These days if you tell me anything is ergonomic and good for my kids’ eyes, you can take my money.

With digital learning being inevitable, I am so glad for an eye-care monitor from BenQ that is large enough and fully adjustable when my three growing kids are engaged in screen time.

A big box came for us!

Unboxed, and loving the size!

Super easy to set up, and now left on their study desks to be connected to anything they need

Staring at the screen for extended periods forces the eye muscles to keep focused at an exact spot, making it easier to cause eye fatigue or other vision problems. I have ONE child left not ‘stricken’ by the spectacle syndrome, and surely now, this screen is here to give him (and the other two, too) a comfortable screen experience so the myopia does not strike (0r worsen, for the other two)!

The BenQ Eyecare Monitor also offers these FIVE features:

1. Brightness Intelligence Tech: BenQ’s unique Brightness Intelligence Technology (B.I. Tech.) can automatically adjust the monitor’s brightness according to the ambient light, so that students can focus on computer programming or coding instead of spending time dealing with the complicated monitor settings.

2. Low Blue Light: Blue Light Technology filters out harmful blue light for both good sleep quality and eye health.

3. Flicker-Free: Flicker-Free Technology can effectively diminish eye fatigue and irritation for better viewing comfort and studying efficiency.

4. Height Adjustment: the GW2480T with ergonomic design can be customized for height, tilt, pivot, and swivel makes it fit better with different stages of growth.

5. Color Weakness mode: Scientific research shows that congenital color vision deficiency affects 8% of males and 0.5% of females. The GW2480T with a Color Weakness Mode can help this group of students feel the joy of color and see the true colors of this world!

My only child not in glasses

Please stay this way, ok!

BenQ is offering an awesome deal this National Day. They are taking 7% off, no GST, from 1st Aug to 31st Aug 2019 for GW2480T Eye-Care Monitor at BenQ Brand Store. Find out more about other GW Series Eye Care Monitors here and learn more about what’s now in our house for the Kao Kids here.

A Whole New World in Musical Theatre – Review of Aladdin the Musical

August 9, 2019

It was really one of the best laughs I had in a long while. Being busy at work as an entrepreneur and constantly catching my breath day to day with the kids, it was a special treat indeed to be able to head out for date night with the husband to catch the Broadway sensation, Aladdin, at the Sands Theatre Marina Bay.

And man, I was thoroughly entertained by this spectacular performance boasting the most lavish sets and spectacular costumes ever to be seen.

Based on the Academy Award®- winning animated film, this spectacular production boasts a cast of 34 and a staggering 337 glittering costumes, which feature 1,225 different fabrics, 712 different styles of beads and almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals. 40 tonnes of exotic flying scenery and 60 tonnes of automation and staging will be transferred to Singapore in more than 30, 40’ sea containers to recreate the fantasy city of Agrabah including the colourful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and his princess daughter Jasmine and the legendary Cave of Wonders.

Dazzled by these by numbers already?

But what really shone that night and stood out for me was this.

This Genie that was in Gareth Jacobs. Absolutely loved the Genie.

Totally hilarious, totally mesmerising, totally jaw-dropping. So much hearty laughter every time he appeared.

And making me want to eat chilli crab after the show. Go watch it, you’ll know what I mean.

Totally awesome show.

I hear that this English-language production will play its first and ONLY Asian stop here in Singapore, with 50 shows till 1 September 2019. Unless you are headed out of Singapore to the UK or Australia, this is kinda your only chance to catch this musical, featuring well-loved songs from the award-winning film, in addition to the theatrical magic that is best experienced live.

You will love it.

Tickets here from Sistic.

Disclosure: We were invited to attend the Opening Night of Aladdin. All opinions here, including how much I was tickled and entertained, are my own.

I Went For a Full Facelift, Without Surgery [Review of Ultherapy at Halley Medical Aesthetics]

July 4, 2019

These days, I am looking for quick fixes.

In my time-starved world, I need anything and everything that’s efficient and saves me time. And I was so thrilled that  Ultherapy will do just that for me in terms of stimulating collagen, lifting my face and smoothening my skin – because, eh, where got time to go for facial every month?

So what I hear about Ultherapy is this: you spend about one hour to get a non-invasive facelift for tighter and better skin which will last for about a year. That’s all, yes.

Sounds good! This is the quick fix I need for my life RIGHT NOW.

I recently headed to Halley Medical Aesthetics to find out more about Ultherapy from Dr Terence Tan, the same doctor who froze my fats a while earlier this year and made the cellulite on my thighs disappear. Dr Terence Tan is someone I fully trust, because after having experienced CoolSculpting at his clinic, I am convinced that it’s needful to be under the care of someone experienced and who knows what he’s doing with the technology that’s available to use.

Dr Terence Tan sharing why delivering 800 shots of micro-focused ultrasound energy for my full-facelift, with upper neck – no less – is important to him. It’s about dedication and commitment to his customers!

It’s the face we’re talking about here afterall; nobody wants a botched job!

Dr Terence Tan explaining how Ultherapy treats the different layers of the skin

Dr Terence Tan introducing me to Ulthera® – the machine responsible for delivering micro-focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen non-invasively

Back to Ultherapy, which I’ve heard so much about, being non-invasive, needle-free and all. BUT I’ve also heard about the discomfort it can cause, and so I needed to go for a consultation to understand what this all means. Quick fix doesn’t mean just go for a process blindly, right.

So here’s what it is, and what it means to undergo Ultherapy, and this treatment specifically at Halley Medical Aesthetics, summarized.

Ten Facts You Need to Know About Ultherapy at Halley Medical Aesthetics:

  1. Ultherapy is the only non-invasive skin tightening treatment that’s cleared by the US FDA. This means that it’s backed by numerous robust clinical trials and is very safe and effective. There is no downtime, no surgical incisions made.
  2. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to bypass the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s collagen.
  3. With Ultherapy, doctors are now able to direct ultrasound energy with pin-point accuracy at three specific skin depths (1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm), to trigger lifting of the skin from within, a process that will develop over a period of 90 days. Tissue laxity is largely the result of structural weakening in the skin’s foundation (called SMAS) which is only accessible during a surgical facelift before Ultherapy came about.
  4. It is the only non-invasive treatment that has real-time visualization capability which allows doctors to see precisely what layer of tissue they are treating. This enables doctors to target exactly where energy will be delivered, and to avoid structures such as bone and blood vessels.
  5. The body will start responding to Ultherapy right after the treatment, and the skin will become tighter and more lifted over time with results most obvious three months after treatment.
  6. Medical evidence shows that the lifting and firming process continues even after three months.
  7. Ultherapy can be used to treat the whole face or it can be used to target problematic areas on the face like the cheeks, undereye, forehead, jawline, and upper and lower neck.
  8. Halley Medical Aesthetics (Halley) follows the Amplify™ Protocol recommended for Ultherapy. This protocol advocates that doctors deliver approximately 800 lines (or shots) of focused ultrasound energy for an effective, long-lasting full-face and upper neck lift. This means you can go elsewhere to do this but you may not be experiencing the full 800 shots! which Halley promises.
  9. Halley also gives patients doing the full-face and upper neck lift treatment an Ultherapy patient record that details the number of lines delivered to each part of the face. This is to provide them with transparency and peace of mind that they are receiving the optimal number of focused ultrasound energy needed to lift different parts of the face.
  10. Halley has also won two “Golden Record Awards” for their commitment and dedication that the clinic puts into delivering Ultherapy to its patients.

Halley has won 2 records for Ultherapy

So what about the discomfort? Any google search will inadvertently show up results of people talking about some pain they experienced. And I definitely need to have my fears allayed about this, and what level of discomfort to expect.

What I really appreciate being at Halley is that nothing is glossed over thoughtlessly if you had a concern. You get very honest answers here and yes, Dr Terence Tan says, there will be some degree of discomfort experienced because the device is directing micro-focused ultrasound energy into structural layers of the skin and such penetration will cause a certain level of discomfort. To minimise the discomfort, Dr Terence Tan recommended a combination of oral painkillers and numbing cream application.

And, that is ALL that will be experienced DURING the treatment. Some people may feel soreness on the jawline for a day or two, but other than that, it’s not going to last.

Oh well, for someone who’s walked an entire day without realising her foot was fractured, pushed three babies out naturally, did a hair transplant (will blog about it soon!), and lived with horrible cramps two days a month that sometimes induces fainting, I think I can live with this “pain” of some sort.

Ok la, let’s go for it!

TREATMENT DAY
On the day I was scheduled for Ultherapy, I showed up an hour early, took painkillers provided by the clinic and had numbing cream applied on my face and neck. I was a little nervous nonetheless but was quickly calmed by the ever-funny Dr Terence Tan who would tell me jokes and ask me riddles. I think he’s found a way to calm his patients’ nerves, since he’s probably done this for so many patients.

Numbing cream applied to my face and neck after cleansing

When it was time to start, Dr Terence Tan constantly checked in with me to see if I was feeling ok and would adjust the energy level if I wasn’t. The discomfort was also greatly alleviated with a fan blowing cool air next to my face, such a brilliant idea.

The fan blowing cool air to my face was such a relief!

Getting my shots on the right cheek

The Ulthera machine visualization screen which shows Dr Terence Tan my skin tissue depth, and also show how many lines (or shots) that have delivered to my right cheek

So the areas where it’s more boney and has lesser flesh were the parts that you could feel a zapping sensation that’s more pronounced than the rest. It was a momentarily sort of shock-zap that would disappear quickly. It was like maybe, 5 seconds of a burning sensation combined with a sharp pinching feeling of your skin.

Ultherapy on the forehead

Ultherapy on the left cheek. I’m smiling here cos’ there really was minimal discomfort and Dr Terence Tan kept telling me jokes

Ultherapy on the upper neck – double chin be gone!

I had two foam bears to squish and that helped with those bigger, sharper zaps that came in the undereye and jaw lines. Other than that, it was really interesting to watch Dr Terence Tan work with the Ulthera machine, experienced as he is, in adjusting the energy level according to how ok I feel, and at the same time, counting down the 800 shots he promised to deliver

Skillful hands at work!

He would place the device on the different parts of my face and activate the shots – all very deftly and skillfully within an hour.

POST TREATMENT

Any change? Yes! My double chin area instantly felt tighter!

After I was done, I felt a little sleepy from lying down for a full hour, and some aching sensation on my jaw. Almost immediately my face felt tighter. The next few days, I felt my face becoming tighter, my double chin becoming smaller, and my jawline becoming sharper.

I kid you not, it was that obvious, that fast.

I was so amazed when I looked in the mirror that I exclaimed to my husband that this is probably an investment I need to make every year.

Apparently, results will only be obvious 90 days later BUT I already felt a significant difference a few days after the treatment. I actually also felt my skin was more supple by the third week, and that it was absorbing facial products a little more readily than before.

I think there will be more surprising finds in the weeks to come, and I can’t wait. Feeling a huge difference already with collagen stimulated naturally, and I am pretty sure it hasn’t reached its peak yet. Another post to come after my 90-day review.

Evidence of my 800 lines, recorded in detail: cheek & jaw area for the 4.5mm depth

Shots delivered at the 3.0mm depth

These are the 1.5mm depth shots at my undereye and forehead area

My picture captured in a recent event, post-Ultherapy 2 weeks!

It’s $3900 to get 800 lines done, and I reckon this has been one of the best quick fixes ever. This price tag is for every 1 -2 years which your face would need this non-invasive lift. With this, you probably don’t need monthly facials, plus it goes a longer way than surface-only masks and scrubs.

Time for me to start saving up! Meanwhile, if you want to see what I went through for Ultherapy at Halley, watch the video below:

What Happened to My Fats- My CoolSculpting Journey with Halley Medical Aesthetics

May 13, 2019

As I write this, more than 3 months have come and gone since I stepped into Halley Medical Aesthetics to say goodbye to the cellulite in my inner & outer thighs.

It’s time to unveil and reveal, if this REALLY works. And yes, the body takes about 3 months to completely break down and release the frozen fats as waste.

It’s been a while, but it’s been worth it.

Because? Not going to be shy here – I’m revealing my AFTER pictures.

Because it is very clear that CoolSculpting has shaved off some years of stubborn fats that exercise couldn’t.

Dr Terence Tan showing me the verdict of CoolSculpting after 3 months

A picture to reveal the inner thigh and also the other outer thigh (I have some very obvious vein-work on my thighs and it’s got nothing to do with CoolSculpting!)

Definitely slimmer now in the thigh area. Ok, bikini, here I come.

How much fats were frozen? Enough for a contour to be seen!

Shaved off some cellulite on my thighs, that’s for sure!

Nothing in these pictures have been photoshopped, just so you know.

Getting back in shape and finding the energy to lose all these fats stuck deep inside the thigh areas have been nothing but trying for me the past decade since my first pregnancy, and this, in my time-starved world, is a great solution.

Now I wished I had done CoolSculpting on more areas at one go.

Family life as we know it Invites & Tryouts Milestones and growing up The Kao Kids

Family Life As It Is [Outdoor fam photography with Bespoke Photography]

April 8, 2019

We got our family photos updated recently, and in view of how posing in a studio would be challenging (HAVE YOU SEEN MY KIDS LATELY? They make all sorts of funny faces!), we grabbed at an opportunity to have our family photographed outdoors instead with Bespoke Photography.

I liked that I had no idea what to do for our one hour photo shoot BUT the Bespoke Photography’s photographer had many ideas and still gave me full autonomy to decide. He supplied suggestions, colour schemes, outfits, and even asked me to send him shots and styles that I would like to recreate.

I had initially wanted to head to Gardens by the Bay, but truth be told, I would be too tempted to run into the Cloud Forest if the heat got unbearable, so I went with the photographer’s suggestion of going to a lesser known place in Canterbury Road for a picnic, some frisbee and football with my kids, and lots of running around.

And we got more than shots of us playing frisbee and football that lovely Saturday morning.  I love it so much that the photographer captured the little moments of us doing things together – observing, talking and piggyback-riding.

These are very precious moments to me.

It’s not every day that someone comes along and captures the kids at play, but it is every day that the kids play this way. Surely then, I need to remember my kids playing in their wildest, and happiest.

The days are long but the years are short, and soon, childhood is but a memory. We certainly had the opportunity to freeze some moments in time that Saturday morning.

Just one hour, about 70 photographs captured, and I got naturally edited photographs within 2 weeks!

There’s a lot of sentiments just browsing the photographs again and again and I must say Bespoke Photography offered a much-needed service in my busy-ness to allow me to slow down and give thanks for my active, healthy and happy family. Definitely something to budget in at various milestones of our family life, and I am glad we now have pictures accurately depicting what family life is like, with the kids being 10, 9 and 7.

Check out their very reasonable rates here.

Disclosure: We were invited to a one-hour photo shoot with Bespoke Photography. All the running and sweating and exercise was done by the Kao family and not stunt doubles. No monetary compensation was received.

(Self) Examination Ben Kao Family life as we know it Getting all sentimental now Nat Kao

Being mama to my fabulous Feb boys

March 8, 2019

I always find it hard this time of the year not to go all crumbly and soft and shed tears of nostalgia and reminisce.

My boys are Feb boys and this time of the year each one of the boys adds one more candle to the cake and I’m always an emotional wreck.

I have penned many such entries every February as a mother because there’s just too much emotional flooding not to write and get it out.

Nat turned SEVEN on 20th and Ben turned TEN on 26th. I cannot believe that it is double digits now for my firstborn. Has it really been a decade already since I’ve mothered this child?

Both the boys are sassy and smart (and sometimes smart-mouthed) and they are growing up so fine, I find it hard to believe so many years have gone by. Nat is learning to navigate the forays of formal schooling, making new friends and discovering his interests.

Along the way we’ve found out he’s got a nasty temper when pushed and can really immerse in name-calling so much so you don’t want to piss him off and rub him the wrong way. He gets especially annoyed when his clean and neat and organised private spaces have been compromised by his siblings, or if I gave instructions to make everyone pack that included him because that to him is grossly unfair – he is the most organised child of the lot, so he thinks!

We’ve grown to learn that this boy does have fangs. Hurhurhur.

The other one, my beloved firstborn, is 10 this year and I would never have imagined him being almost as tall as me now and weighing so much that I can’t, for all the strength in me, lift him even a quarter inch off the floor. I know someday he will stand taller than me, which I need to prepare myself mentally for. This boy frustrates me to no end with his quirks (think farts and burps and the ‘floss’) but at the same time lets me in to his world with all that’s trending including fortnite dances, lame jokes, unfiltered language and everything he loves as a boy. I am just afraid I will not have him as a boy very soon and the thought of seeing him as a croaking, pimply teen is making me cry a little every morning when fb invites me to revisit my memories. I see all those cute little chubby Ben faces and I’m not joking, I really lay in bed to cry.

Boys, if you are reading this some day, know that mama has had a hard hard time adjusting to you guys growing up so fast and maybe that’s why sometimes she’s a little lunatic and emo on days you just don’t get her.

Those times you got frustrated not knowing why your mama was like that? Yea. Cos she also has got bad, bad separation anxiety she basically couldn’t function.

She too, has to grow, little by little, to accept that you boys will someday grow up to be fine young men and that she no longer can hold you both like the babies she used to squish.

How My Fats Died – My CoolSculpting Journey with Halley Medical Aesthetics

February 21, 2019

So the day finally came for me to say goodbye to my cellulite thighs sometime in early January. I had written about why I needed to freeze my fats in an earlier post and some considerations I went through before making the decision.

The answer was pretty clear after my consultation with Dr Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aestheticsit’s non-invasive and the effect are long lasting, so why not?

I was really excited about it. Good riddance to bad rubbish, and I cannot wait to say goodbye.

In fact, I had announced it almost everywhere I went, from Christmas dinner gatherings to every circle of friends.

Because freezing my fats seems like the best thing that would happen to me in this new year!

So back to Dr Terence Tan. On Treatment Day: I confirmed that I wanted to ‘CoolSculpt’ my outer and inner thighs. I then got my blood pressure, BMI, height and weight and body fat percentage measured and started the CoolSculpting process immediately after.

First, I got changed into comfortable clothing that would allow Dr Terence Tan to draw and mark the treatment areas. My ‘Before’ treatment photos were taken for documentation.

Dr Tan drawing the position where the applicator will be placed.

Marking the spot for the inner thighs

Next, I was invited to lay comfortably on the treatment chair and get ready for CoolSculpting. Dr Terence Tan and his assistant, Mandy, went straight to work placing the applicators on my already marked out treatment areas.

Halley Medical Aesthetics actually has DualSculpting, which means they use two CoolSculpting machines to treat 2 areas at the same time, which reduced my treatment time by 50%.

So, my left outer thigh was treated in tandem with my right inner thigh first, and then the other way after.

The outer thigh will take 75 minutes with the CoolSmooth Pro applicator, which will be applied by a binding method. The inner thigh will take 35 minutes with CoolAdvantage applicator, which will be applied through suction.

Dr Tan showing me the CoolSmooth Pro applicator which will be applied to my outer thigh

An anti freeze was placed on the treatment area before the applicator was bound to my thigh

Applicator on, fat freezing GO!

Now for the inner thigh. I appreciated that while the marking was done with a lot of care, the applicator was placed as high up near the groin area because that’s where the fats are

This was CoolSculpting by suction. Same thing: antifreeze followed by applicator.

There was minimal discomfort. In fact, after a while the cold numbed any sensation I had and I was at total ease.

While waiting for the treatment for one side to be completed, my time was well-maximised. I had a chat with Halley Medical Aesthetics’ in-house nutritionist, Jean, about my current eating habits, my medical history, and the possibility of going on the weight loss programme. She walked me through some suggestions of meal planning according to my preferences and lifestyle.

While being treated on the other side, I worked on my phone for a bit…

And even had a rest!

After each treatment, there would be a 5-minute massage of the area. This massage breaks down the frozen fat cells further and accelerates the lymphatic drainage for fat loss. I was warned ahead of time that there may be discomfort and to be mentally prepared for it, so whilst it was something I knew, I was – at least for the first few seconds – shockingly unprepared for how sensitive my skin felt to the rub. Other than that, I manage to survive those 5 minutes!

This was the temporary redness of my skin on the outer thigh

There, I did it! CoolSculpting, or also known as fat freezing! I left the clinic feeling a little numbed from the treatment in my thigh area, but ecstatic at the same time.

I can’t wait to see the results in 3 months!

Knowing that about 25% of the fat cells will be completely annihilated on that day was the best thing ever. Look out for my follow-up post of my results.

Actually, without needing to see real-time change, I am glad to have gone through this. THE FATS – THEY ARE FROZEN. FOREVER!

YESSSSS!

Why My Fats Must Go – My CoolSculpting Journey with Halley Medical Aesthetics

January 31, 2019

I always thought someday – one day in the distant future – if I’ve made enough money and plucked up enough courage, I might get some liposuction done to get rid of those cellulite thighs I’ve been living with since three pregnancies ago.

I often show the kids my thighs and what pregnancy and child birthing did to these once pretty-looking slim thighs.

I even do it in a humourous way – twist up the skin around my thighs and show them how orange-peel like, dimpled-looking they can be! They laugh and think it’s gross, and it’s even change the way Becks thought about having kids (ewww Mama, I’m never gonna give birth!, she says) and I show it off like it’s a badge of honour for having done something heroic.

Three kids in four years. It was an impossibility in my world made possible through sheer grit and love.

But truth be told, the dark eye rings, the cellulite thighs, the flabby tummy, the exhaustion built up from years of insufficient rest and the occasional body chills – I do not consider them my badges of honour.

If I could do something with them through lifestyle changes or anything non-invasive, I would.

Over the years I have taken an active step to do good to my body to feel good, whether through TCM care, taking regular head space and doing yoga regularly. I’ve even tried the keto diet and intermittent fasting the whole of 2018, which I am stopping for now (more on that later).

This was me at my heaviest, most uncoordinated and tired in December 2018.

And while all these have been incorporated as a lifestyle, they never really addressed the cellulite that bothered me. It always felt like so much effort, so little results.

Heck, what results?

Truth be told too, that in my time-starved world where exercising in a gym or running or doing lots of calorie-burning workouts could definitely help, I simply do not have the time nor do I want to make it a priority.

I have a business to grow, a household to run, motherhood duties to fulfill (not for one, not for two, but for three different individuals), self-development to pursue, friendships to maintain and constant upskilling to do professionally, so in the grander scheme of things, I’d be honest to say I’ll take a quick fix anytime.

To those people who hear my woes and always answer with “Exercise, lah. How long does it take?”, try living in my world. I would prioritise 15 minutes to read with my child or write a blog post or sort out my very messy photo album on my phone anytime, than to go for a run. You know what I mean?

Anyway.

Back to those cellulite thighs, caused largely by the stubborn fat deposits in that area, which I found an answer to.

Yes, I found an answer. An answer that would get rid of them for good, forever. And it’s called FAT FREEZING.

CoolSculpting (in layman terms: a fat-freezing procedure) or technically known as “cryolipolysis”, is a technology that’s been around for several years and is a non-invasive and US FDA-approved process of fat removal.

How it works is that the process of cryolipolysis using the CoolSculpting technology cools the area of body fat in a non-invasive manner and breaks down the fat cells without affecting other tissues. The fat cells in the treated area die a natural way and are eliminated from the body through our waste system.

So unlike liposuction which is invasive and disposes of the dead fat cells right away, cryolipolysis allows for the immune system to treat as waste and for the body to dispose of the dead fat cells naturally. The effect is long-lasting; however the effects can only be seen 2-3 months after the procedure.

And of course, I didn’t pluck all these information from Google and plonk them all here. I spoke with a doctor whom I consulted regarding freezing my fats, asked all the questions I wanted, and had him walk me through the procedure.

I went to Halley Medical Aesthetics at the end of last year to learn more about this process and to clarify as much doubts I had. I consulted Dr Terence Tan, who patiently answered all my questions about CoolSculpting. I needed to be 100% sure I knew what it was, how it would affect me, if there were any implications, side effects, etc.

I’ve listed down some Q&As that transpired during the consultation with Dr Terence Tan, and my thoughts that helped me in my decision making to embark on my CoolSculpting journey. Here goes.

How does this work and how effective is this treatment in terms of fat removal?

The process uses a controlled cooling technology to kill fat cells. CoolSculpting is proven to cause the removal of fat cells per treatment area by 20-25%.

Will my fats return? Is this a permanent situation?

The understanding we need to have regarding having fat cells in our body needs to be accurate. By age 5, our body stops producing fat cells and we have a fixed number of fat cells in our body. We become fat by the sheer fact that our fat cells grow in volume, not quantity. So with CoolSculpting, what happens is that the fat cells are removed for good, by 20-25%. That’s a permanent situation. Say you have 100 to start with, CoolSculpting reduces the number to 75. BUT should you continue an unhealthy lifestyle and not monitor your diet, those 75 cells will grow in volume still.

Is this a weight loss programme?

CoolSculpting is a fat reduction and body contouring procedure NOT a weight loss programme.

Side note: upon understanding my medical history, Dr Terence Tan suggested that I may wish to try Halley’s weight loss programme for a month to reduce my cholesterol. Although I have a normal BMI and my body fat percentage is not a cause of concern, some weight loss for a month may help with my cholesterol. He also mentioned that I should not go on a keto diet if I have high cholesterol and should think about working out a nutrition and exercise plan to tackle this issue.

He also recommended taking the following:

  1. Duromine to suppress my appetite
  1. Nopal, a medical grade fibre supplement, taken before lunch and dinner so that I will feel full quicker
  2. Xenical, a fat blocker to be taken with dinner

These are approved medication and not meant to be ongoing for my case; but something I could consider trying.

What can I expect post-treatment?

Tugging sensation at the treatment site, some temporary redness and sensitivity to treatment area, and swelling or bruising depending on individual a few days after. Recovery time from these is short.

I took some days to think about it after my consultation with Dr Terence Tan, did lots of follow-up research including reading this FAQ here and blog reviews, and upon certainty that I wanted to have those fats of mine on the thighs gone, I made my appointment for my CoolSculpting procedure earlier this year.

It’s clear to me: a solution better than liposuction is here; it’s non-invasive and the effect are long lasting.

My cellulite must go. My fats must be frozen.

(Self) Examination

2019

January 7, 2019

I started this blog back in 2012 when I was done with having three kids back to back as a means of finding a solace because motherhood was insanity then, and I needed an outlet to purge all the madness from my system.

I also started the blog as a gift to my children, hoping that some day they will be able to read what life was like raising them. And that I loved them through the rainbow days, and thunderstorm days.

This is the year 2019 and the years are indeed short. Ben is 10 this year. Becks, 9, and Nat 7.

I have officially transitioned from mothering preschoolers to primary schoolers this year, with the last child entering Primary 1.

And increasingly, it is becoming difficult to blog and chronicle my sentiments, reflections and musings raising them. They have become aware of the concept of self, and this concept of self is growing. As they are more keenly aware of who they are in their cultural, school, family and social contexts, they are also not so pleased for too much information to be shared.

Now they would ask me: Are you posting this on Instagram? Will this be on your blog?

Hurhurhur.

So, I’m at this inflexion point right now where I have SO MUCH to write about them but so little permission to, that I would have to increase my capacity to remember all our memories together.

In 2019, Motherkao blog would now be more about ME than them, and perhaps what’s it like living life at the brink of my 30s turning 40.

To possibilities, potential, and beyond. Happy 2019!
